How to Care for Real Leather: A Complete Guide
Real leather is one of the few materials that gets better with age — if you treat it right. Here's everything you need to know to keep your leather goods looking sharp for years.
1. Wipe It Down Weekly
Dust and dirt are leather's quiet enemies. A soft, dry cloth (microfiber works great) wiped over the surface once a week is enough to keep buildup from settling into the grain. For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water — never soak it.
2. Condition Every 3–6 Months
Leather is skin, and like skin, it dries out. A quality leather conditioner restores moisture and prevents cracking. Apply a thin layer with a clean cloth, work it in with circular motions, and buff off any excess after 10 minutes.
Recommended conditioners: Saphir Renovateur, Leather Honey, or any beeswax-based balm.
3. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight
UV rays fade leather and dry it out. If you're storing a bag long-term, keep it in its dust bag inside a closet — not on a windowsill or in a hot car.
4. Stuff Bags When Storing
To keep bags from collapsing or creasing, stuff them with bubble wrap, tissue paper, or a clean t-shirt before storing. This preserves the shape and prevents permanent fold lines.
5. Treat Stains Fast
For water spots: blot (don't rub) immediately with a dry cloth, then let it air dry away from heat. For oil stains: cover with cornstarch overnight, then brush off. For ink or harder stains: see a leather repair specialist — home remedies often make it worse.
The Long Game
Leather that's cared for develops a patina — a soft, lived-in glow that's literally impossible to fake. Every scratch, every soft spot tells a story. That's the whole point.
